Support the National Electric Car Acceleration Program, BPPT Install Two Charging Station Units

CS Hybrid B2TKEBPPT through the National Laboratory for Energy Conversion Technolgy (B2TKE) continues to support the innovation and development of electric cars by Indonesian human resources. Among them is by clearing technology in Electric Charging Stations (EVCS).

Said the Deputy for Information, Energy, and Material Technology (TIEM) Eniya Listiani Dewi, this Electric Charging Station is the same as a public fueling station (SPBU) in conventional vehicles.

“In line with the national electric car acceleration program, in 2018, BPPT prepared 2 charging station systems namely 50 kW Fast charging station at BPPT Jakarta and a 20 kW smart charging station at B2TKE-BPPT PUSPIPTEK, South Tangerang”, she said at the BPPT Office, Jakarta, (December 5, 2018).

Furthermore, the Deputy for TIEM said, she would test electric cars for daily office operations from South Tangerang to Jakarta and vice versa. Besides that, it can also be used by users of electric cars from the community as a step towards socialization. As a trial, the facilities above prepared three vehicle test sample materials, in the form of two-wheeled electric vehicles, micro cars and city cars..

“We will do the electric vehicle road trip and the launch of the electric vehicle charging station starting from the BPPT Thamrin office to Puspiptek, Tangsel”. she said.

Charging Station Technology

Eniya stated that environmentally friendly cars are currently experiencing rapid development in several countries where one of them is an electric car. This time the electric car uses batteries to store the energy that will be used to rotate the electric motor.

“Charging the battery of an electric car is carried out at the electric charging station. So that electrical energy is not only derived from fossils, it is necessary to do innovations and studies by utilizing solar energy. However, because the sun's characteristics are unpredictable, it is still combined with electricity from the PLN grid”, she explained.

At the moment, Eniya said, the duration of charging a car battery is an obstacle in Indonesia. To charge an electric car battery to full it takes 4-5 hours so most people still think twice to move to an electric car.

“The pilot project of the BPPT fast charging station with a capacity of 50 kW has the advantage of being able to charge the electric car battery to the brim in just 30 minutes. It is expected that with the first fast charging station facility in Indonesia, it can encourage people to switch from ordinary cars to electric cars”, she added.

The Head of B2TKE-BPPT, MM Sarinanto, said that as a pilot project for the PUSPIPTEK Zone, a smart charging station was developed (hybrid) from the PLN electricity network and solar energy (Photovoltaic). Both of these installations are expected to operate in both normal and fast charging modes.

Energy charging in electric car batteries during the day is prioritized by utilizing solar energy, both charging normal charging and fast charging. During the day, you can use smart char stations 4 times with a duration of 3 hours to full.

For example, charging is carried out at 9-12 hours, then the contribution of energy from PLTS is 52.5%, while the rest of PLN is 47.5%. However, if charging is carried out in the afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., then at least the energy supplied from PLTS is 22,1%. But what if you want fast charging, then it is done after 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Estimated fast charger can be done 6 times a day with a duration of 1 hour.

“To get greater energy from the sun, fast charging should be done during the day so that energy construction from the sun is more optimal. Fast charging, starting at 09.00-15.00, can be done 6 times with a duration of 30 - 1 hour to full. The average energy contribution from the sun is around 20%. The innovation of the installed charging station, in addition to combining with solar energy, is also communication and monitoring between the two facilities (BPPT and B2TKE charging stations) in a network operator system and android-based prospective users”, she explained.

The future business processes will be carried out by various service efforts:

  • Clearing the electric car technology used in Indonesia and its chargers. This relates to the standards that will be applied (both universally and SNI) and the standard of electricity needs, as well as devices for station charging units.
  • Innovate charging stations with various methods of 100% EBT (eg PLTS + batteries), remote monitoring systems for charging stations and smart battery management to increase battery life. For this reason, B2TKE-BPPT will explore cooperation with local companies to commercialize the charging station innovation product.
  • Reviewing appropriate business models with various alternatives such as application charging station systems (bookings, subscriptions, electricity savings from PV rooftop etc.), battery swapping systems (electric motorbikes), membership patterns, and installation of charging station services in various public facilities through models - current business model (Fintech) or franchise.
